Looking back on my professional development path I can still remember the quote “relationships between people are defined by the way they interact’.

In your job you will interact with different clients, managers or co-workers in different situations on different topics. But what stays the same is the fact that the quality of any interaction is very much influenced by the way you ask questions, listen to the answers and respond to them.

SESSION 1 – SMALL TALK

How to:

  • open a small talk confidently and invitingly
  • listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues
  • build on what others say
  • summarize and paraphrase effectively

SESSION 2 – INFORMATIVE TALK

How to:

  • prepare what information you need
  • ask targeted questions to get needed information
  • listen actively with purpose
  • request clarification and specification
  • avoid vague or ambiguous understanding

SESSION 3 – PROBLEM SOLVING DISCUSSION

How to:

  • create a collaborative problem-solving atmosphere
  • ask analytical and constructive questions
  • listen without bias or interruption (cleanly)

SESSION 4 – IDEA GENERATING DISCUSSION

SESSION 5 - INTEGRATION CHALLENGE

How to:

  • adapt questioning and listening strategies, techniques and types to various real-life situations and switch between them when the moment asks for it

Why participate?

APPROACH:

You will participate in 5 online sessions, each consisting of the following 3 sections:

  • a preparation section of programmed self-study to elevate your level of knowledge and understanding of the specific skills
  • a practice section of online group-exercising to enhance your level of applying what you already know and understand
  • an integration section of self-training to support your level of applying successfully all you learned in real-life situations

Before each online practicing section, you will receive the theory of the WHY, WHAT, WHEN and HOW regarding the specific skills to be trained and mastered, including illustrative examples, videos and articles.

At the beginning of each online practicing section there will be a short assessment of your knowledge and understanding regarding the skills to be practiced. If needed a short update will follow to close eventual gaps.

At the end of each online practicing section there will be a take-away inventory and a presentation of the assignments to be executed before the next session.

LOGISTICS:

In effort, time and structure, each of the 5 online sessions will feature the following:

EFFORT AND TIME:
  • preparational self-study assignments (1 to 1.5 hours before the session)
  • online practicing sessions (2.5 hours per session, including 15-min break)
  • integrating real-life assignments (minimum 30 minutes per working day)
STRUCTURE:
  • opening of the session
  • introduction of the specific skills to be practiced during the session
  • check-in assessment
  • variety of practicing exercises
  • inventory of the highlights
  • check-out assessment
  • assignments as a preparation for the next session
